Since keeping track of the current firmware versions of multiple NitroKeys (or other devices) can become quite a hassle, it’s very useful (at least for devices where security isn’t a major concern) to note the currently installed firmware directly on the device.
Unfortunately, the surface of the Nitrokeys is so resistant to adhesive tape that none of them will stick to the device itself over the long term.
I have no idea how many of these cases are being manufactured or whether the rough surface is the result of a 3D printing process, but I do know that a small, smooth area on the bottom - where the user could attach a small piece of paper and a strip of tape to indicate the firmware version - would be very helpful in simplifying management.
Please share your thoughts and reasons for and against.
I have multiple Nitrokey HSMs, and to distinguish them I printed labels using one of these handheld label printers. On the HSM that I use for FMD, I put a sticker from www.stickermule.com, as you can see in the photo in this blog post. Both the label and stickers have sticked fine for the past ~4 months.
Maybe your Nitrokeys have a different casing, but it would certainly be worth to try different types of adhesive, and see if one sticks.
I don’t usually buy EVEN MORE products just to improve the quality of a specific product, because, after all, climate change has been a reality for several decades.
If a product isn’t good enough on its own, then it’s simply subpar and should at least be improved (actually, that should have happened before it was first released).
I have several 3C NFC devices whose surfaces are a little rough (which suggests an unintentional and clumsy design).
