Feature question: HID keyboard mode for auto-typing passwords

Hi all,

I’ve been exploring the Nitrokey 3’s Password Safe features, and I noticed that while it can securely store static passwords and OTPs, there doesn’t seem to be a way to use the device as a HID keyboard to auto-type a stored password (similar to how YubiKey’s static password slot works).

This would be especially useful for cases like BitLocker, full-disk encryption, or other pre-boot environments where you can’t use copy-paste or an app/CLI to fetch the password. Instead, a simple button press on the Nitrokey 3 could “type” the stored password into the input field.

So my questions are:

  • Is HID keyboard emulation (auto-typing credentials) on the roadmap for Nitrokey 3?
  • If yes, is there a timeline or firmware version where it might be introduced?

The thing is, I consider now getting yubikeys or nitrokeys and the yubikeys are able to do that but I am very curious about nitrokeys.

Thanks in advance for any insights!
