Linux Upgrade What is Firmware Password

I am trying to upgrade firmware using linux and get to where I must enter the Firmware Password but I do not have any passwords other than my PIN and my AdminPIN.

I didn’t have this problem before but have forgotten what I did when I last did an upgrade. Please can you help?

Regards,
Budge

The default firmware password is “12345678”.

Hi Jan,
Well that didn’t work.
My notes do not have a firmware pasword but I must have used something for when I first updated the firmware from when it was new.
Do you have any other suggestions.

There is nothing on the device I cannot lose so I could do a reset but need your advice first please and best way forward. I could also try using Windoze if you think that will overcome my problem!!!

Alastair

Hi! If you don’t know the valid firmware password, there is no way to update the device anymore. The only thing you could do is to break the casing and use a debugger to flash own firmware. However we don’t recommend it and it would void warranty.

Best regards

Hi Jan and thanks for our reply. Unfortunately I followed your earlier reply exactly and you had miss-typed the default password. Having done some more reading I saw that you had made a mistake. The default password stiil works.

Sorry for the confusion. I corrected my previous response.

Hi Jan,
Many thanks. Update of firmware on Nitrokey Storage now done using linux and now I am reminding myself of usage etc. I do have a couple of question. In the installation under linux I am supposed to install libccid but I cannot find this in my openSUSE Tumbleweed repo sites using yast. Do you have an rpm I can download?
Also Nitrokey-app is not in the repo either. Could it be that Tumbleweed is not yet supported or is my system at fault?

Perhaps it’s name is pcsc-ccid.

We don’t do the packaging for SUSE and don’t use SUSE ourselves. The only help I could provide is this link, which you probably figured already.

Hi Jan,
I am pleased to report that upgrading the firmware on my second Nitrokey Storage device went well so both devices are now up to date so many thanks, got there in the end!

If I may impose on your time a little longer, I had hoped to be able to use one of my NitroKey devices for logging in, similar to what can be done with YubiKey. I am just beginning to use KeePassXC and thought I would ask the keepassxc authors if the NitroKey workd in a similar manner to YubiKey, which is supported on keepassxc.

I was surprised and disappointed to learn from the reply from keepassxc that the respondent apparently thought NitroKey was a simple USB memory stick and did not appear to be aware of the in-built capabilities of the NitroKey.

Can I use Nitrokey Storage in this way or should I use a different NitroKey model?
