a friend of mine wanted to do a soft reset of his nextbox. So he attempted to perform the two times button press within 2 seconds. But his problem was not solved. Instead, the box asked for a new administrator password and his data is gone.
So two questions:
Is it possible that the factory reset was triggered before the five-second pressing was completed, perhaps by pressing the buttons twice? Could someone confirm if this could be the case?
Maybe my friend mispressed the 5 second button press. The hardware button is not particularly easy to press, so it’s possible this was his fault. The question is: Could the user interface for the factory reset be improved to better prevent accidental misuse? For example, could an additional confirmation press be required after an eight-second press? Currently it seems more difficult to do the less harmful resets, than the dangerous factory reset.
Yeah, but you don’t know the meaning of the different LED colors without rereading the documentation. But the fact that there is a long press is something you remember. So some less‑experienced user will simply try a long press, without remembering that it may trigger a dangerous full reset. I would say that this is not a good user interface.
In my current case, I don’t know what happened, because my friend didn’t know what was important. So he can’t say how the led was blinking.
I would test the reset trigger myself, but my own Nextbox is in productive use for my family, so I can’t conduct such experiments on it. The Nextbox belonging to my friend has been taken apart for file recovery. In a few weeks, when I’m finished with that, I may test the soft reset.
