Nitrokey: Boot Hash Mismatch

Hello,

I accidently pulled out my Nitrokey Storage 2 (pre-configured) during log in . I got an error code: Boot Hash Mismatch. As a new user to Linux I find it hard how to proceed and feel unfamiliar with the system.
I can’t even access my computer without the key.

How do I fix this? Appreciate all help, thanks!

Basically the firmware measures everything what happens before you boot the OS. A hash is calculated with the message output, parameters etc. during boot. If you do not plugin the Nitrokey via USB and it is part of the measurements, the hash will be different and warn you about this. While passwords might not be released automatically from the TPM chip on the mainboard when the hash is different, you can still boot with the password for the disk encryption but you need to be cautious that the system was not tampered with.

If you plugin the key again and just boot a second time, the hash should be fine again and boot should commence normal.
